THE HANGED MAN

After the tragic death of his daughter, a once-renowned psychiatrist begins treating Zara, a cryptic young woman whose mannerisms, memories, and traumas echo those of his lost child. As their sessions grow increasingly surreal, Ravi descends into a hallucinatory spiral where grief fractures reality, and the boundary between patient and ghost dissolves into a haunting reckoning.

DIRECTORS' STATEMENT

screenplay by Gabriela Abrahão & Leonardo Costa

directed by Leonardo Costa

"This film treats grief not as an event but as a presence. Zara is not merely a patient; she is a dissonant echo, a living shadow lodged in the protagonist’s unconscious, pulling him downward into his own emotional undoing. Through a restrained mise-en-scène, lingering frames, and a time structure that steadily disintegrates, we sought to craft a language in which the viewer, like Ravi, becomes unable to discern memory from hallucination, therapy from haunting.

This is a film about the erosion of reason under the weight of absence, about the slow disintegration of the self when confronted with the image of what cannot be repaired. In O Pendurado, the therapy room becomes a ritual space, and each session with Zara a psychic incision. Inspired by tarot, psychic horror, and stories of mourning that resist easy catharsis, we wanted to explore the most intimate terror: the kind that forces us to look inward, even when there is no mirror left to reflect us".
